From Planner Projects To a 3d Stickers Shop

The Evolution Of My Planner Projects

I started the year launching Doodley Day as a place to share my free planner projects.

I ended the year with a 3d stickers shop.

The feedback on my projects, especially the 3d stickers was overwhelmingly positive for the idea. But most people found the idea of hand drawing both sides of a sticker too hard. Some people asked for finished stickers.

To sell these, drawing stickers one at a time was not feasible. And for awhile, that’s where things ended.

Until a little inspiration hit me and I found a couple ideas that I knew could help me produce double sided stickers more efficiently: a really unique paper, and a professional laser printer.

The Paper

These aren’t your regular vinyl stickers in any way. In fact, they are not vinyl at all.

They are actually constructed with a recyclable synthetic paper that is both waterproof and rip-proof.

It’s an incredbily unique paper that makes really unique 3d stickers. Because this paper also remembers a shape.

You can bend it (not fold it) and it will remember that shape — even after being closed between two pages!

When I found this paper, I knew I was on to something and I needed to look at creating these stickers as a business.

Sticker Printing

For the synthetic paper I use I don’t have a choice: it only works with laser copies.

But if you are wondering if laser is better or worse? The results below show my original artwork scanned at 600dpi. Compared to scanned images printed on a color laser printer and the scan of a print made on an ink jet printer.

You can see how the original watercolors are translated by each machine with the ink jet being much darker and I would say somewhat muddier. It made me feel good to see dropping so much money on the laser printer did more than work on the specialized paper: it made much better quality prints. I feel like the color laser printer actually did a better job than the original in creating contrast and clarity in the images (this is without any electronic manipulation of the images).

Projects Of The Future

I actually have several other 3d stickers projects planned for the weeks ahead (and a couple regular sticker ideas). Anyone that works with me for any length of time, will know I’m always doodling and drawing in meetings or on phone calls. I’m not ignoring things. Really I’m not. I actually process things best when I’m listening and I think the drawing makes me focus more on sounds (whether it’s true or not I’ve never gotten a bad performance review so I’m running with it).
